- Now visit accounts.google.com.
- Click on Data & Personalization.
- On the next page, navigate to Download, delete, or make a plan for your data.
- Next, click on Delete a service or your account. If you want to delete your entire Google account, click Delete Google Account and Data.
- Click on “Delete a service” in the next window.
- Now select the service you would like to delete. To delete Gmail, select the Gmail account and click the trash bin icon beside it. You can still get your Gmail messages back via Google Takeout. So to do that, you should click on “Download data.” Alternatively, you can copy your Gmail account to a new Gmail address.
- Next, enter an email address that is different from the one associated with the Gmail account you are about to close. This should be done under “Enter an email address,” where it says “How you will sign in to the Google dialog box.
- Afterward, click on “Send a verification email.
- Open the email from Google. That is, no-reply@accounts.google.com. You will notice the subject as “Security alert for your linked Google account. Or “Gmail Deletion Confirmation.”.
- Now, click on the link in that email from Google.
- You may have to sign in to the Gmail account you are about to delete.
- Afterward, move to the section of Confirm Gmail Deletion and select “Yes, I want to delete (plus your email address appearing in the sentence) permanently from my Google Account.
- Now proceed to “Delete Gmail. Remember that you cannot reverse this step after you click Delete.
- Next, click done.
When you delete emails, what happens to them?
Anyone who sends an email to your deleted Gmail account will have their email bounce back as “not sent.” This means you may need to let your friends and spouse know your new address if you really care.
Deleting your account permanently removes the messages. Thus, it is no longer accessible in Gmail. However, if you did well to download a copy using Google Takeout or any email program, you will have them intact.
