As a result, students will be looking for every available means that will help them stand out from the rigorous competition.

And there is one simple way students can make themselves stand out: by utilizing Columbia’s early decision application.

Meanwhile, with early decisions, students can easily increase their chances of getting admission into Columbia via a significant margin.

In that case, this article will break down everything a student may need to know to begin the process of taking full advantage of early decisions at Columbia.

Therefore, we will be discussing early decision acceptance rates, deadlines, the process of applying, and many other things.

Columbia Early Decision Acceptance Rate

Some years ago, the acceptance rate for early decision applicants was around 15%.

In the same manner, the standard acceptance rate for students who did not apply under the early decision application is around 6%.

So, students who take advantage of the early decision deadline instantly have 10% higher chances of acceptance when compared to standard admission applicants.

Meanwhile, acceptance rate percentages never reveal the whole story. For instance, students who take advantage of early decision deadlines may focus on perfecting their Columbia application in particular compared to other colleges they apply to. This is especially as Columbia is their first choice.

Therefore, factors like this may influence these statistics. However, there is still some possibility that taking advantage of the early decision deadline may likely increase the chances of one’s acceptance.

Meanwhile, the website Top Tier Admissions saw the early acceptance admissions data and discovered the likelihood of acceptance going down over the past 20 years.

As a result, they stated that the early decision admittance rate may decrease to 10% in the upcoming years.

Columbia Early Decision Decision Date

Hence, applicants who apply under early decision will get feedback from Columbia University in the middle of December.

In the same way, those who apply under the regular decision deadline will get feedback on May 15th.

So, if one is accepted into Columbia University under early decision, one is expected to accept Columbia’s offer of admission.

Therefore, after receiving an early decision application, applicants must withdraw all other applications they have submitted to other institutions.

Upon being accepted, Columbia will begin to monitor one’s senior-year academic performance to ensure one continues to meet Columbia’s standards.

As such, students will start reporting mid-year and final grades during the middle of their senior year.

Columbia Early Decision Deadline

Hence, the deadline by which early decision students must submit their application is November 1st.  So, applicants must submit all standardized testing scores by the November test date, if applicable.

However, Columbia claims that early decision and regular decision applicants will be considered equally when it comes to their financial aid package.

As such, even though applicants will get feedback regarding their admissions early decision, their financial aid package will be released alongside normal decision applicants.

So, when one’s early decision comes out, there are three different answers one can receive from Columbia come mid-December.

One of such answers is an offer of admission, the second is a deferral to be considered alongside regular decision applicants and the last one is a denial of admission during the early decision timeframe.

Does Columbia Have Early Decision 2?

No, Columbia does not have an Early Decision 2.

Meanwhile, some universities provide an initial early decision date and a secondary early decision date that operates similarly to Early Decision 1 but with a slightly different application deadline.

It has always been said that Columbia does have an early action application option. So, the early action deadline is March 1st. However, statistics regarding the acceptance rates of early action admits are not available. Therefore, one can reasonably conclude that those who apply under early action are also more likely to be admitted compared to general admission.

Meanwhile, early action applicants will not have high chances of admission compared to formal early decision applicants.

Unlike early decisions, early action applications are sacrosanct. As such, one can be accepted for early action and still keep other college applications active.

Columbia ED Deferral Rate

Hence, the deferral rate for early decision applicants to Columbia University is around 65%.

Given that roughly 15% of early decision applicants are admitted. However, about 20% of early decision applicants received a rejection letter during mid-December.

So, when one is deferred, it means that one can still be considered for admission alongside regular-decision applicants.

On the other hand, Columbia University states that, unlike regular admission students who can receive feedback as late as the end of May, those deferred for early decision admittance will get feedback with a final decision on April 1st.

So, between the deferral notification and the notification of acceptance/rejection, Columbia advised the deferred students to keep Columbia up to date with mid-term grades or any other significant developments that may influence their admissions decision.

Hence, they will surely get feedback regarding their admissions decision in no distant time. In the same vein, they will be able to contact Columbia with respect to factors that can increase their chances of admission.

How to Apply to Columbia for Early Decision

Hence, there are three different platforms through which Columbia applicants can submit an early decision application. Viz are Common App, Coalition Application, and Questbridge.

Regarding Columbia’s Common Application portal, there will be an agreement which one can have access to by indicating on the Common Application that Columbia is really their choice for early decision.

This, as a matter of fact, will give students access to a form that they, their parent/guardian, and their school counselor must sign. This will prove that if an offer of admission is given to the student, the student is now bound to accept that offer.

In this agreement, Columbia enforces the policy that a student must accept an offer of admission if they apply through early decision.

Also, for the Coalition Application and Questbridge, students will find the early decision agreement form on their application’s status page only after submitting the application.

So, as soon as one has access to the applicant status page, one can officially submit their early decision agreement form.
