Amex Travel – Amex Travel Login

To begin with, most popular travel credit cards let you redeem your points in various ways, including the option to use points to book travel through a portal. And Amex Express is no different. Cards that allow such incentives in redemption include Chase Ultimate Rewards credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Freedom®, both of which let you book travel directly through the Chase travel portal.Amex Travel

That said, the same thing goes with Citi credit cards like the Citi Prestige®, which lets you book airfare, hotels, and more through the Citi travel portal. This post will help you will all you need to know about Amex travel.

Thus, American Express is yet another program that makes it possible for cardholders to book travel through its own portal, known as AmexTravel.com.

In other words, to book travel with points through AmexTravel.com, you only need to have a credit card that earns points in the American Express Membership Rewards program.

However, anyone can book travel through this portal and pay with another form of payment, such as a credit card.

Be it as it may, Amex Travel is the online travel portal for American Express cardholders to book flights, rental cars, and other travel needs. Members are given the option of paying with a credit card or redeeming American Express Membership Rewards to pay for their trip.

Amex Travel Overview

AmexTravel.com is a third party booking site that works similarly to competitors like Expedia.com or Orbitz.com. With that in mind, you can use this portal to compare prices for airfare, hotels, and more across the web, just like you would with another booking site.

But there are more benefits to using this portal if you’re an American Express cardholder. If you have The Business Platinum Card® from American Express.

For example, you can get 35 percent of your points back (up to 500,000 points per calendar year) when you use rewards to book first or business class tickets or any flight with your selected airline.

Also, note that both the business version and The Platinum Card® from American Express for consumers let you earn 5x points when you pay for prepaid flights or hotels through AmexTravel.com.

Meanwhile, the popular American Express® Gold Card lets you earn 3x points on prepaid flights booked through AmexTravel.com.

Beyond specific cardholder benefits, AmexTravel.com makes it easy to compare flight and hotel options.

Also, you may find offers that include additional benefits when you book a cruise through the portal, such as onboard credits or free specialty meals.

Fees for Using the Amex Travel Portal

Anytime you book a flight through the Amex portal (either on its own or as part of a package), you’ll pay a fee of $6.99 for domestic flights and $10.99 for international flights.

These fees are waived if you have the Amex Platinum card and are logged into your account. If you choose to book a flight by phone rather than online, there’s an added $39 phone service fee.

If you make changes to your flight, there’s a $39 reissue fee in addition to whatever fee the airline charges. This only applies to advance changes, not changes due to problems like canceled flights.

How to Book Flights on the Amex Travel Portal

Booking a flight on American Express Travel works like most other third-party booking sites. You simply select your departure and arrival destination, travel dates, and the number of travelers to filter available flights.

Thus, after searching for your trip, the first result is always a special deal from Delta Airlines, with other options sorted by price underneath.

Be it as it may, you will notice that because this profile has The Platinum Card® from American Express attached to it, the site automatically highlights additional benefits, such as Delta Sky Club access and Centurion Lounge access at participating airports.

It also lists the cash price and the number of points required, which is helpful to determine which currency works best for you.

Fees

American Express Travel charges a fee to book, but they bundle this into the displayed price. The fee is $6.99 per domestic ticket or $10.99 per international ticket. These fees are waived as a benefit of the Amex Platinum card, just make sure you’re logged into your Amex account when booking.

Rental cars On the Amex Travel Portal

Those looking to redeem points for a rental car can do so at a rate of 0.7 cents each. Again, it’s not the best and you might want to look for other ways of redeeming Amex points to maximize their potential.

To search for a rental car, enter your destination, pickup, and drop-off date and time. Filter results by car type, the price per day, rental car company, features, such as type of transmission.

And mileage options, and whether you want to pick up the car at the airport or an off-airport location. That’s it. You’re just a few clicks away from renting a car in your desired destination.

Booking Hotels On The Amex Travel Portal

Using AmexTravel.com to book a hotel or resort stay works similarly, requiring you to enter some information to find properties in destinations you want to visit. Once again, you can pay for your booking with points, cash, or a combination of the two. You do need to have at least 5,000 Membership Rewards points in your account in order to pay with points.

While you get 1 cent per point in value when you use American Express Membership Rewards points to book flights, you only get around 0.07 cents per point when you book hotels through the portal.

Also be aware that, just like with any other travel booking site, booking a hotel through AmexTravel.com usually means forgoing hotel loyalty points or elite night credits.

Note that select premium American Express credit cards, like The Business Platinum Card® from American Express and The Platinum Card® from American Express, let you access an additional hotel program, known as American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts.

This program lets cardholders book stays at over 1,000 luxury hotels in the world with added benefits worth up to $550 per stay. Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts perks can include:

  • Daily breakfast for two people
  • 4:00 p.m. late checkout
  • Complimentary internet access
  • Noon check-in, based on availability
  • Room upgrades based on availability
  • Unique resort amenity worth up to $100

The Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts program is only available for eligible premium cardholders. Using this program also typically means going without elite hotel benefits or points for paid stays.

Cruises With Amex Travel

When you search for a cruise on Amex Travel, the results will be based on the lowest available rate, and if you hover your mouse over the rate, it will show all available cabin types with prices (cruises can be complex with so many cabin options). I’ve found the rates to be nearly identical when booking with Amex Travel as they are when booking directly.

By booking a cruise through Amex Travel, you’ll also receive a special onboard amenity, higher onboard credits, or premium champagne. It’s worth noting this program is more restricted than Fine Hotels & Resorts and is only available on specific cruises.

International Airline Program

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express and The Platinum Card® from American Express lets you access a newer Amex program for frequent flyers known as the International Airline Program.

Thus, this program was created to increase access to lower fares on 20 participating airlines, but it’s only good for international premium class tickets.

To search for fares that qualify, all you have to do is have a personal or business Platinum card and log into your account. From there, you only need to use AmexTravel.com to search for premium economy, business class, or first-class flights to any international destination.

Use the booking tool to search for first-class, business class, or premium economy to an international destination. At that point, you may see some flight options to show an International Airline Program banner.

Hotel Collection

If you hold any of the following American Express cards, you can book properties in The Hotel Collection portfolio:

  • American Express Gold Card
  • The Centurion Card
  • The Platinum Card from American Express
  • Business Gold Card
  • Business Platinum Card

If you book a stay at a property that’s part of The Hotel Collection for two or more nights, you qualify for additional benefits, such as room upgrades (if available at check-in), hotel credits of up to $100, and even discounts on room rates.

As long as you hold one of the aforementioned cards, you’re able to use Amex Membership Rewards to cover your room at a rate of 0.7 cents per point. Generally, you’re better off using The Hotel Collection when you plan to pay cash for a stay rather than using points.

Point vs cash

There are several ways to book flights using the Amex Travel Portal. You can choose to pay for travel with your credit card or redeem points.

The Amex Travel flight portal is structured similarly to other online booking sites. You’ll see a box where you can enter departure and destination cities. If you’re not picky about your departure airport, you can select an entire city (such as New York, which includes several airports, including nearby Newark).

During the booking process, you’ll see the dollar amount and the option to use Amex Membership Rewards points on the right-hand side. On the left side of the screen, you can filter the number of stops, departure and arrival times, preferred airlines, and even flight numbers.

Note that Delta Air Lines is a featured airline in the Amex Travel Portal, so you’ll often see Delta flights highlighted first.

If you’re flying from an airport with an American Express Centurion Lounge, such as San Francisco (SFO) or Dallas (DFW), you’ll also see an indicator that you can use your eligible card for entry.

If you’re an Amex Business Platinum cardholder, you’ll earn 5x points for booking flights through the Amex Travel Portal only. That means you won’t earn bonus points if you book directly with the airline or another travel portal.

On the other hand, the Amex Platinum card offers 5x points on flights booked through the Amex Travel portal or directly with the airline (on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year, starting Jan. 1, 2021).

Upgrading flights using points

You can also upgrade your flights in the Amex Travel portal using points or dollars. They give customers the option to upgrade even their economy class ticket.

You can book using your Amex card, use points, or a combination of the two. But remember, you have 24 hours to change or cancel your trip, so if your plans change, you’re not locked into the itinerary.

How to Book with points And Cash

Much of the booking process to pay with Amex points is similar to how you’d book using cash, except that there’s a box where you can apply some or all of your points.

If you have the Business Platinum Card and use points to pay for economy airfare with your selected airline, you’ll receive 35% of those points back, up to 500,000 points per calendar year. Additionally, any business or first-class airfare booked through amextravel.com will also receive the rebate.

Similarly, if you hold the American Express® Business Gold Card, you’ll get a 25% points rebate (up to 250,000 points back per calendar year).

This may not be the best use of your points, because you’ll often get better value transferring your Membership Rewards to airline partners. TPG currently values Amex Membership Rewards points at 2 cents each. However, these tickets are almost always treated as revenue fares by the airlines, meaning you’ll earn redeemable and elite-qualifying miles.

Insider fares

American Express Travel offers special deals on flights called insider fares, that are available to American Express cardholders with enough Membership Rewards points to cover the entire cost of the flight. These offers, primarily on Delta flights, tend to be the lowest available price.

Amex Travel Cancel Flight

Individual airlines and hotels have their own policies that cover cancellations. However, AmexTravel.com does offer the option to see all your booked travel and cancel or re-book a flight with ease using your My Trips page.

On the other hand, you will still be subject to any change. Or cancellation fees imposed by the carrier if you’re not covered by a flexible policy or existing waiver.

Some American Express credit cards do offer trip cancellation. And interruption insurance that could apply in some situations where you have to cancel or re-book your plans.

That said, Cards that offer this benefit include The Business Platinum Card® from Amex Express. And Platinum Card® from Amex, as well as several co-branded airlines.  Now, And hotel credit cards like the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card. And the Delta Skymiles®  Reserve American Express Card.
