Part D
This plan covers the prescription of drugs, making your medication affordable. This coverage plan is available as a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage (MAPD) or a standalone prescription drug plan (PDP). Standalone PDPs must be considered creditable prescription drug coverage, that’s it has to meet Medicare’s minimum standard of offering coverage or be good enough as what Medicare offers.
If you wish to join MAPD OR PDP, you will need Medicare Part A and B.
How does Part D work?
Part D has 3 coverage periods:
#1. Initial Coverage Period
You will enter this initial coverage period when you meet your annual deductible. Once this happens, you begin to enjoy prescription benefits until you reach the limit set by Medicare. After you have reached the limit of this stage, you move to the next coverage.
-
Coverage Gap
This period is also known as the “donut hole”. In this, you will pay more for your drugs. This period also has a limit like the first one.
-
Catastrophic Coverage
In this final period, you will pay less share of your drug costs until the year ends.
Can I change my Medicare plan?
Yes. You can change your Medicare to a different Medicare plan or Medicare Advantage plan. You can do this twice a year. The Medicare Annual Enrollment and the Open Enrollment period help you select the best healthcare plan.
Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
The Annual Enrollment Period takes place from October 15 through December 7. At this period, if you have a Medicare Advantage plan that’s Medicare Part C or you have Medicare Part D, you can either add, quit or switch your plan to another.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period
If you register for the Medicare Advantage plan within the Annual Enrollment Period, you’ll have from the first of January to the 31st of March to exit your plan and go back to Original Medicare.
Also within this period, you will have a one-time chance to:
- Switch your Medicare Advantage plan to another
- Register in a standalone Part D prescription drug plan
Note that this applies only if you are unregistering from the Medicare Advantage plan which includes Part D prescription drug coverage to go back to the Original Medicare

Yes, it’s important to enroll in Part D when you’re first eligible even if you have few or no prescription drug costs.
